About the Program
The BWH Faculty Mentoring Leadership Program is a peer learning experience for midcareer and senior faculty physician and scientist mentors to enhance their mentoring effectiveness. The program is geared towards faculty who are currently mentoring other faculty and are eager to foster a collaborative learning environment among BWH faculty mentors. Each of nine monthly sessions is a highly interactive, case-based discussion facilitated by senior faculty mentors who have participated in the program.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Learn with facilitators, guest speakers, and each other to increase effectiveness as a mentor
  • Enhance mentoring skills and become a mentoring leader at BWH
  • Foster a collaborative mentoring atmosphere among faculty members and broaden the program’s impact to increase the number of faculty with mentors

Curriculum
The FMLP curriculum is co-developed by the faculty facilitators and the participants to be relevant and timely to the learning community. Sample topics to be included in the FMLP Seminars:

  • Creating a Culture of Mentoring
  • Structuring the Mentoring Relationship: Expectations and Boundaries
  • Difficult and/or Complex Mentoring Situations
  • Life Course of Mentorship: Stages, Evolutions, and Transitions
  • Mentoring Across Differences (gender, ethnicity, age)
  • Professionalism and Feedback
  • Mentoring for Leadership Development
  • Mentoring for Innovation in Academic Medicine

Participant Profile
Each seminar will be a small group to facilitate discussion.  Division chiefs and faculty mentors are encouraged to apply.  Applicants must meet with following criteria:

  • Assistant Professors and above
  • 5 years of mentoring experience; currently providing mentoring on career development, planning, HMS promotion, and hospital advancement to one or more BWH faculty members on a regular basis
  • Commitment to attend all sessions
