Medical Education STARS - Showcasing Talent Among Residents, Scholars, and (Faculty and Fellows)

The BEI Med Ed STARS Presentation Series is a career advancement opportunity for trainees (residents and fellows) and early career faculty working on clinical education innovation projects and/or research to present their work to a community of clinical educators and receive focused counsel and feedback.

1st Project: One size does not fit all: the customization of learner education in gynecological surgery
Led by:
Ian M. Vasicka, MD
Consultant OB/GYN
MD Educator, Harvard Medical School
Brigham & Women’s Hospital (Affiliate)

Description: Recent qualitative research based on grounded theory has revealed four domains characteristic of highly effective surgical education: the patient, learner, educator, and culture. To provide trainees with individualized custom education facilitating successful learning, all four components must be addressed by clinician-educators and incorporated into the broader paradigm of time-variable competency-based medical education (CBME). This educational project through survey design assesses PGY-4 residents’ attitudes, perceptions, feelings, and concerns about their postgraduate training experience. The data provides insights into learners’ perceptions of training experience and sense of preparedness for transition to practice; thereby, enabling faculty to address specific learner needs through tailored educational measures and approaches

2nd project: The Promise of Medical Improv in Undergraduate Medical Education
Led by
Noreen Mansuri, MD,MA
Psychiatry PGY-1
Brigham & Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School

Description: Medical improv allows healthcare trainees and professionals to benefit from improvisational theatre teachings to enhance their communication, collaboration, and quick- thinking skills in clinical settings. In this presentation, Noreen will introduce key texts and ideas from the field of medical improv, provide an overview of its current applications to medical education (including the medical improv program she co-developed at her medical school), and consider future opportunities to integrate medical improv into UME.
