Brigham and Women’s Hospital maintains an affiliation agreement with Harvard Medical School (HMS). Medical students during their entire four years of HMS training may rotate at our hospital. Brigham and Women’s Hospital hosts over 70 courses, clerkships, and electives — teaching nearly 600 HMS and HMS Exchange Clerkship students per year.
UME Leadership and Staff
The Brigham and Women’s Hospital UME Leadership Community extends through all four years of medical school training. The Undergraduate Faculty Committee meets once a month and discusses issues related to curriculum and policy changes.
BWH Courses, Clerkships, and Electives
There are over 70 Harvard Medical School courses, clerkships, or electives offered at BWH. For a list of these opportunities, review the HMS Course Catalog and search “.23” for BWH. Several BWH courses may also appear when searching for “.J” for multi-site.
Visiting Medical Students
Medical Students interested in completing a 4th year elective rotation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital must submit an Exchange Clerkship Application to the HMS Office of the Registrar. Please review the HMS Course Catalog for information about electives offered at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Courses ending in .23 and some courses ending in .J will occur at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Medical Observers
Brigham and Women’s Hospital currently does not have a medical observership program. Individuals interested in a medical observership must have approval from a BWH Department Chair and must have a BWH faculty sponsor. Additionally, all observers must meet the hospitals immunization standards and have medical insurance, in addition to other requirements. Observerships in most departments are extremely rare, with many departments only accepting one observer every few years. External Medical Students interested in rotating at Brigham and Women’s Hospital are encouraged to apply for an exchange clerkship rotation through Harvard Medical School.
