The BEI Med Ed STARS Presentation Series is a career advancement opportunity for trainees and faculty working on clinical education innovation projects and/or research to present their work to a community of clinical educators and receive focused counsel and feedback.

This session’s topics will be on:

Project 1: Bedside Rounding Alliance for Internal Medicine & Neurology Residents (BRAINs) program. This initiative aims to address "neurophobia" and the unmet neurology educational need of internal medicine residents. As internal medicine residents are often the first point of contact for patients coming into the hospital with neurologic symptoms, it is important to improve their knowledge and comfort in identifying and treating neurological disorders. We designed, implemented, and evaluated a trainee-led inpatient bedside rounding teaching program that aims to improve internal medicine residents’ (IMRs) confidence with assessing neurological patients, including obtaining a focused history and performing a neurological exam. Presented by: Prashanth Rajarajan, MD, PhD PGY4, Department of Neurology

Project 2: Implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive clinical neurology curriculum for Internal Medicine Residents at a large community hospital without in-house neurology Many internal medicine residents train in hospitals without in-house neurology and utilize teleneurology, which may affect their comfort with managing neurologic emergencies. We created and implemented a simulation-based curriculum for internal medicine residents at Salem Hospital, a large MGB community hospital without in-house neurology, collecting qualitative and quantitative data on the residents’ perceptions and experience with approaching and managing neurologic emergencies before and after. Presented by: Marinos G. Sotiropoulos, MD PGY4, Department of Neurology
